Nutrition
Food = Medicine
A healthy diet consisting of a variety of minimally processed, nutrient dense foods is absolutely critical to good health. It’s also undoubtedly the piece of the puzzle that people struggle with the most. After all, who doesn’t love to eat?! The tricky part with eating healthy compared to exercising is that a typical exercise session lasts 30 to 60 minutes whereas being mindful of the food choices we make requires discipline for every other waking hour outside of the one spent exercising. Mine field alert! That’s a lot of opportunities to mess up.
Eating is one of life’s great pleasures and while we thankfully no longer need to spend our days hunting and gathering food we still spend A LOT of time thinking about food and specifically what foods we’ll eat at our next meal. So much of our social and family lives involve food or are centered around traditions of gathering and eating together. And it’s a beautiful thing!
But fear not. With a little planning there can still be room for all your favorites and guilty pleasures.
A common saying in the fitness world is “You can’t out-train a bad diet.”
Fact check: TRUE.
The bad news: Optimal results are only achieved when exercise is coupled with a healthy diet. (Doable!)
The good news, Part 1: Healthy foods can actually be delicious!
The good news, Part 2: You likely won’t believe it now, but as you start to exercise and nourish your body with healthier foods you’ll crave the junk foods that you currently enjoy less and less. Our bodies respond to being fueled with healthy foods by craving more healthy foods. (Pretty cool, right?)
